I would like to see home cooking become a new trend. Throughout my life I have seen restaurants become more and more popular options for meal. Inflation (and it is the same in western Europe) this has led to higher prices and lower quality. I believe restaurants are also a major factor in increasing obesity levels. I have learned that I cook better than the restaurants I can afford to eat at.

I agree, I like being waited on but I can’t help thinking I could make this better myself!

Always healthier and tastier to DIY -- and it doesn’t have to be complicated. Fresh ingredients and good seasoning are key.

Having a hubby diagnosed with Crohn’s has forced me to look at all food labels and question ingredients when eating out (a very challenging situation, except for CA where the restaurants have a book detailed with each selection’s ingredients).

Happy to hear that your garden is growing, even if your hens are getting the benefit!!

That’s hilarious, that reminds me of Lucille Ball working at a factory with a conveyor belt, remember that scene?

It still seems complicated to keep it going, the planning, shopping, cooking, cleaning … but that’s another “first world “ problem, right. A pot of beans and rice doesn’t take too long and lasts 3 days if you’re not a brat😇

I also meant to ask how much the other stuff she mentioned was and where she shops, if it's nationwide like Aldi.

I have heard of some good online resources but I just shop at our local grocery store- I think I got lucky on the asparagus deal! Consolation for the chicken raid I guess.

I watched the movie twice and would watch it again. I recently learned of my gluten intolerance after suffering all my long life with stomach issues. Living in a townhome, with about 8 square feet of earth, makes it impossible to grow my own food, but I can be more careful about what I buy. Thanks for this encouraging message.

There’s probably some great farmers markets near you too! It’s so weird that most doctors don’t look at diet first in their patients especially with a gut issue!

Nearly 30 years ago, my lovely bride was working a fulltime job, taking advanced courses at a local college, and winning top prizes in a tennis league. It seemed only fair that I contribute some of my time to her efforts. So, I started cooking our main meal, both as a creative outlet, and to take some burden off her lovely shoulders. In the years following, my bride got her advanced degree, retired from her profession, and freed up a great deal of her former time constraints. She still plays tennis--doubles rather than singles. And, she devotes a great deal of her time to gardening--we're in the "prepping the ground" stage now. Yesterday was my day to run our tiller over our organically fertilized plot. I will plow the needed furrows when the potential for frost is reduced to negligible. Having a power tiller with a plow function has made those tasks somewhat easier, but it's still work. I still spend much of my time in the kitchen. It remains a creative or artistic outlet, but as we are both getting older (she not so rapidly as I) I concern myself with the healthy aspects of cooking to a greater degree. And, while I readily admit that fresh from the garden is superior to store bought, things just stop growing during the winter in our area. Weekly re-supply of Chilean, Peruvian and Mexican imports supplement our supply of local and hothouse veggies, and we go for organic whenever available. I continue to enjoy my kitchen time and find the constraints of "healthy" cooking are not so onerous. They are just another challenge to my creativity.

I’m trying to convince Chuck how creative cooking is, if only it wasn’t every night!

I love the gentle humor of yours and your commenting readers' hearts! This is a most important topic! I am grateful when writers from every discipline address modern day banes we face, like GMO foods which harm the human gut biome.

As far as cooking goes, I run into problems following recipes due to reading comprehension issues. Some recipes call for adding ingredients "all at once". In my teens, I took this literally because of my scientific mind. I'd gather all the ingredients, get them ready, and try to hold everything with two hands to pour them all in the same second. It was exasperating with more than two items at a time! Consider my great embarrassment, but delighted relief, when my folly hit me!
